humans have hair...elephants have hair... most members of the cat family have fur (mink, etc). fur is supposedly thicker and more numerous than hair. i think their main purpose is to protect the animal's skin, but fur also acts as an insulator.
Living next to a common which has horses freely running around (and scaring the crap out of me) I should have spotted that. But which bit is the fur? I thought it was all hair? Could we assume that you would never wear a hair coat, only a fur coat? Does that start to split the group?

So at what point does hair become fur?
Can you have hairy dogs and furry dogs?
Are bears always furry?

Horses have both hair and fur, the greedy beggars. And don't get me started on those teeth of theirs.
